    Abstract

The Tomales Bay gill net fishery was dominated by 5-, 6-, and 7-yr-old herring, Clupea harengus pallasi, which combined for 82% of the catch in the 1982-83 season. The San Francisco Bay gill net fishery was dominated by 5- and 6-yr-old herring, which combined for 64% of the catch. The San Francisco Bay roundhaul fishery was dominated by 3-, 4-,and 5-yr-old herring that combined for 72% of the catch. Two-year-olds composed only 14% of the catch in San Francisco Bay, indicating poor recruitment of the 1981 yr class. The mean length of herring in the Tomales Bay catch declined to 208 mm BL, but the mean length of the San Francisco Bay gill net and roundhaul fisheries increased to 203 mm BL and 183 mm BL, respectively.
